Identity theft vengance

When Mark Giordano of Fishkill, N.Y., contacted The Chronicle on Feb. 12, he was frustrated. Some brazen San Francisco crooks had stolen his identity, rented an apartment, charged phone calls, and even ordered pizza with his credit cards. And he couldn’t get anyone to do anything.

Giordano recalls talking to various authorities and being told “our hands are tied.” Yet on Friday local law enforcement groups were bragging about catching the bad guys and charging them with 24 felony counts.

Apparently they were untied when the story broke in The Chronicle on Tuesday. The next day Giordano got a call saying a SWAT team had broken into the apartment, arrested the alleged crooks, and had discovered some 50 other stolen identities.

“So this was a great ending,” he said. “Here I am 3,000 miles away, the bad guys get caught and in the process we probably helped 50 other people.”
